Namibia is deeply rooted in
Africa's ancient cultural history. Like with many other African
countries, written records and man-made structures documenting
events and activities in the territory before 1800 are extremely
scarce.
Most of what is known today about human
habitation in the area stretching from the Namib Desert on the
west coast across
central highlands towards the
Kalahari further east can mostly only
be deducted from heavy weathered artefacts and isolated
archaeological sites. The origins of Namibia's earliest known inhabitants remain shrouded in mystery but they left us with an awe-inspiring heritage in the form of rock paintings and engravings as well as stone tools, pottery, bones, and specially adapted shelters. They all point to a people of hunter-gatherers who led a nomadic to semi-nomadic life in tune with seasonal game migrations and plant growth. |

Some of the most amazing facts concluded from such finds are that those were not San people but life-stock breeders who kept alternating between summer and winter pastures. They obviously found enough water sources along the edges of the Namib Desert to see little reason for venturing further east into the mountainous inlandč.
