Travel Tip #3

Clanwilliam  & Calvinia

Sasendle’s Scheduled Tour Namibia-Kalahari-Cape Discovery visits  the  Northern Cape during the Namaqualand Flower Season.

The journey leads via Calvinia to Clanwilliam, making it the ideal place to experience the flower spectacle at the right time and place! Clients have the extra opportunity to experience South Africa’s finest  “Wild Flower Show’, which takes place during the last week in August and showcases the inimitable flora exclusive to the Clanwilliam area.

More info at: www.sa-ventues.com/events/

Photos of Namaqualand flowers in full bloom may be found in our Photo Gallery: Explorer Safari and Discovery Safari

Regional and national "Flower Hotlines" are available during the period August to October. Visitors are provided with information on quality, size and position of the most beautiful flower areas.

A special event in Calvinia is the annual Hantam Meat Festival - "a carnivore's dream becoming reality" on the last weekend of August. Lamb and mutton of Southern Africa's finest quality are prepared in every possible way and portions are sold at give-away prices.
Sasendle’s   tours regularly overnight in Calvinia, at one of the oldest and most authentic guesthouses: Hantam Huis - we'll tell you more about this special place in one of our next newsletter editions. In the meantime, please take a look at the following web pages:

Travel Tip #4

Bushmen in the Erongo Mountains

Sasendle’s Scheduled Tour Cape-Namibia Explorer provides the opportunity to visit the Ju/Hoansi Bushmen Living Museum, on the last day of the trip.
The Bushmen, based on the Farm Omandumba, on the northern edge of Namibia's Erongo Mountains, present visitors with their traditional hunter-gatherer culture dating back thousands of years. The Living Museum in the Erongo is a branch of the original “Grashoek Museum in Bushmanland”.  It serves as an educational combination of school and museum where visitors may experience ancient Bushmen traditions by joining the Bushmen on hunting and gathering trips, by learning how to make fire, weapons and jewellery, and how to prepare meals from bush food.  Healing practices as well as song & dance routines may be observed, and handmade souvenirs are available for purchase, too.

The Erongo is Namibia's oldest mountain range and was indeed once inhabited by a pre-historic civilisation of semi-nomadic people. Their marvellous rock paintings and engravings tell amazing stories of life in a worldly paradise and encounters with foreign visitors ... we'll tell you more about this little known 'gem' in the heart of Namibia on 'Travel Tips' - page 3!

More August Celebrations & Festivals

Each year, the last Sunday in August is a significant day for the Herero people in Namibia.  During a day-long gathering and celebrations in the town of Okahandja, hundreds of  people  of different Herero tribes honour their  relatives who died since the colonial war some 100 years ago. There are horse processions and military-style marches; the processions move through the streets and culminate at  the graves of the ancestors. It is a festival of colour and tradition. Tourists are allowed to visit in a respectful manner.

Okahandja is situated only about 70 km north of Windhoek. Visitors of the Herero Day who prefer to spend a few days in the area will find accommodation in comfortable lodges and guest farms. Some offer day excursions to the Ovitoto Herero Settlement nearby on request.

P. S.
Sasendle can organise catered short weekend and day trips from Cape Town into surrounding wilderness areas, along the South African west & south coasts, and to classic sightseeing highlights in the Western Cape Province - enjoy 4x4 experiences even at short notice.

Travel Tip #6

Whale Watch, South Africa

Southern Right Whales visit the ocean waters around South Africa's Western Cape Province between June and October each year. Here they mate, give birth and prepare their babies for the journey back to Antarctica.
Spending most of their stay in the shelter of peaceful bays, this is a care-free time for the whales and an exciting experience for the youngsters who re-visit their place of birth for the first time. Plenty of playful action may be observed, next to whale mothers nursing their new-born babies and giant males patrolling the bays in search of females ready for mating.
These spectacular events lend themselves as highlights of optional extension stays in & around Cape Town, in conjunction with Sasendle's  Namibia-Kalahari-Cape Discovery and Cape-Namibia Explorer scheduled tour departures, during the winter months.

Whale watching around the Cape of Good Hope, especially towards Hermanus in the east but also along the West Coast, was a very rewarding experience again, well into September '08!
Hermanus is regarded as the best land-based whale watching destination in the world. The annual Whale Festival takes place around the middle of September. We will publish more on Hermanus in one of our next newsletter editions.

Travel Tip #7

Marine Life, Namibia

Namibia's Atlantic Ocean waters and the sheltered Walvis Bay Lagoon sustain an amazing kaleidoscope of marine life that thrives on krill, fish and plankton swept along the coastline by the arctic Benguela Current.
Sasendle's  Cape-Namibia Explorer scheduled tour visits Swakopmund, the premier holiday resort on the central Namibian coast, from where a multitude of optional excursions are available to explore the unique natural surroundings created by a cold ocean meeting a hot desert.
Apart from guided half-day trips into the Namib Desert, two of the most outstanding experiences are a boat cruise on the Walvis Bay Lagoon and a visit of the Cape Cross Seal Reserve.
Walvis Bay, Namibia's most important harbour town, and its lagoon are situated only 30km south of Swakopmund. Motor boat and catamaran cruises take visitors into arm-length proximity of Cape fur-seals, pelicans and cormorants, and the absolute stars of this watery world, the Bottlenose and endemic Benguela or Heavyside Dolphins that call the lagoon home. Occasionally, whales may be seen out at sea, and the odd Mola-Mola (sun fish) taking advantage of a boat's bow wave to drift just below the water surface in its peculiar side-ways tilt.

Land-based sightseeing of the largest breeding colony of fur-seals in the southern hemisphere is possible at Cape Cross, situated approx. 120km north of Swakopmund, on the Skeleton Coast. Up to about 120000 seals of all age groups may be observed from close quarters, with black-backed jackals moving about between them in search of an easy meal of still-born pups and deceased adults. Very rarely does one see the brown hyenas in brought daylight that also patrol the colony but both these scavenger species play a vital role in maintaining the balance of this fragile ecological system.
