Namibia-1a:
Sasendle's Cape-Namibia Explorer Safari

Before downloading these images, please read download instructions & conditions of use!

Fish River Canyon, Namibia -  Africa's largest canyon and 2nd largest in the world!

It bares witness to the unfathomable forces at work that broke apart the ancient super-continent of Gondwana to create the Africa of today, and to Namibia's geological history over many million years. SAT's 'Cape - Namibia Explorer' visits this magical place, shortly after entering Namibia. Our safari guests will be able to take in the canyon from the same spot where the photo above came from.

Sasendle on tour in the south of Namibia a soulful journey mostly on deserted gravel roads through uninhabited wilderness

Southern Namib Desert, Namibia

Vast desert plains, rugged mountain ranges, quiver trees between boulders, and seemingly endless vistas against a backdrop of deep blue skies are the trade marks of Namibia's far south. SAT's Explorer Safari traverses the Karas Region en route from the Gariep River to Sesriem and Sossusvlei.

Southern Namib Desert, Namibia -  NamibRand Nature Reserve

En route from the Tiras Mountains to Sossusvlei, our 'Cape to Namibia' Explorer Safari traverses one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in Namibia. The vast, arid NamibRand Nature Reserve, a conglomerate of derelict sheep and goat farms, greets the visitor with some of the most stunning sceneries found along the edges of the Namib Desert. Vistas stretch across wide open plains with minimalistic plant growth to mysterious rugged mountains inhabited by an abundant wildlife. Oryx antelopes, Hartmann's Mountain Zebras, ostrich families, and numerous other large and small desert-adapted animal species are common sights along this route that today is almost devoid of human settlements - only a lonely letterbox of a by-gone era reminds the traveller of still being on earth.

Namib Naukluft Park, Namibia

The Tsauchab River Valley between the Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei is flanked by the high sand dunes that are characteristic for the southern Namib Desert. Dune 45, from where this photo was taken, is a famous landmark en route to the vlei situated another 15 km further down the valley. "Vlei" is the Afrikaans word for a water-retaining depression. Only very rarely does the ephemeral Tsauchab still break through the sand barrier and fill the Sossusvlei - miraculously transforming the barren landscape into a green oasis along its path.

The South African-Namibian border inside the Ai-Ais/ Richtersveld Transfrontier Park runs along the Gariep River - officially re-named from Orange River to its former traditional name, only in 2007.
Newly established ferry services and border posts on either side allow river crossings during day-time hours on 7 days per week, thus cutting journeys between the northern & southern parts of the park short by at least 250 km, if compared to the shortest route via Noordoewer.
However, only 4x4 and 2x4 vehicles with high ground clearance (not sedans) are permitted into the park.

Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

Our north-bound safari ex Cape Town crosses the Gariep (formerly: Orange) River inside the park, at Sendelingsdrift. A pontoon ferry shuttle service covers the short distance between the river banks. Ferry and border posts operate daily, during office hours.
